The 2024 State of Physical Access Control
Report From HID and IFSEC Insider Highlights Key Industry Trends
HID has once again partnered with IFSEC Insider to get a pulse on the state of physical access control around the globe. Last done over two years ago, over 1200 security and access industry professionals were surveyed to find out what their organizations are using to protect their digital and physical assets, what’s top of mind today and what’s driving their decisions as they look to the future.
In the full report, you’ll find out which credential technologies are most popular, which ones organizations are moving away from (and why), how satisfied people are with their current systems, and who is paying for converged physical and logical access projects, among other hot topics. In this blog post, we’re highlighting the top three trends that were identified in the report.
Trend #1: Mobile Access and Digital ID Are Set to Become Ubiquitous
Although a long time in the making, it looks like mobile access credentials and digital IDs are finally reaching a tipping point. According to the survey, nearly two in five respondents (39%) are actively using mobile identities, and between 80% and 94% of organizations are expected to deploy mobile IDs within their organization over the next five years (depending on whether you are asking security professionals or industry partners). Either way, the outcome is clear: all roads are pointing to mobile.
Trend #2: Open Standards Are Driving the Smart Buildings Phenomenon
Open standards, like the Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP), are making a huge impact on the feasibility, growth and utility of smart buildings. These interoperable standards pave the way for connecting systems that create intuitive workplace and residential experiences. From converged security systems to interactive amenity apps to intelligent heating, cooling and power — physical and logical access control, and all kinds of other business systems, are multiplying their usefulness thanks to open standards.
Trend #3: Sustainability Is Having a Greater Influence on Business Decisions
Security is still king in the world of access control, but it now has to share consideration with a few other factors, most notably: sustainability. For the first time, two thirds (63%) of respondents cited that those with responsibility for sustainability have either some influence or are fully consulted when it comes upgrading physical access control systems. Energy saving solutions were also cited by 14% of respondents as one of the top three trends shaping the wider access control industry in the near future.
